Trips Done During Retirement
Before they need to retire, people look forward to traveling a lot but life is hardly
one trip after another in retirement according to a survey of typical retirees. There was a female doctor from the University of California at Berkeley who interviewed 700 retired people who represented the retired population of San Antonio, Texas. Only half usually took a trip as often as once a year, and 40 per cent had not been out of town for more than three years, while many said they never traveled.Journeying outside the country every month is less than six percent of the retirees. In this case, 10 percent of the out of town travel by retirees was to visit their children and 20 percent went to visiting relatives.
In this case, what prevented many retirees from traveling is the lack of money. Able to travel frequently are the 10 percent of the San Antonio retirees with annual incomes of above $5,000. The Black or Mexican American retirees traveled less than those from their income level. Here, the younger retirees and those who considered themselves to be in good health were able to travel more. There is a third of those who traveled as often as once a year that travel by car, either as drivers or passengers. Going by bus is another third, 20 percent flew, and 15 percent went by train.
The travelers who took the bus were not delighted with the transportation. There were specific disadvantages that came about when it came to this kind of transport including the difficulties of getting a bus to the place one wanted to go and the inconvenient time at which the bus left or arrived. She spoke to some people including two thirds of the retirees who have never flown and half who have never been able to ride a train. Some flew and they liked the experience but they used the airlines mainly to visit relatives. What the retirees favored was land transportation because they could see the sights. Vacations were possible via a fifth of the plane trips. In this case, the major complaints when it comes to train travel include the inconvenient schedules, poor connections, and inadequate passenger service, both at the station and in transit.
Considering half of these people, if the passenger services, schedules, and equipment were somewhat improved then they will start taking the train more often for trips. Because they are relaxing, carefree, enjoyable, comfortable, leisurely, convenient, safe, and sociable, trains are advantageous for retirement travel and they were also an excellent way to go traveling, see the sights, and meet interesting people when there was no pressure on time and the purpose of the trip was enjoyment. Even if public transportation can be tiring at times, all the San Antonio retirees who were interviewed wished to travel more. The idea of being rushed or crowded and jostled was something they disliked not to mention sitting for long periods of time in one position, as is necessary to some extent on both the plane and the bus. The train can provide them with the freedom to get up and move about while on a trip.
While seeing the sights, people can enjoy the companionship of other people and this is why many consider train travel to be relaxing not to mention carefree. Half of those she interviewed told her that they would probably go places by train if the service were improved, but the California researcher doubts that this will happen.
The bus and the airplane are considered by many to be the only options for retirement travel. A warning for the transportation industry is what she has. Retirees flocking to the ticket counters is something they should not expect. According to her, if there is special attention to their needs, both as older persons and as leisure oriented travelers, then they might do so but they could still end up staying at home after they decide that the disadvantages of the trip outweigh the pleasures of traveling.
