Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog used topically in the form of eye drops to treat glaucoma. It is also used in the management of ocular hypertension. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterized by damage to the optic nerve that occurs due to excessively high intraocular pressure (IOP). If this increased pressure in the eye is not treated on time, it can lead to optic nerve damage resulting in progressive, permanent vision loss, starting with unnoticeable blind spots at the edges of the field of vision, progressing to tunnel vision, and then to blindness.
Eye pressures glaucoma occurs if the aqueous humor is not removed rapidly enough or if it is made too rapidly, causing pressure to build-up. The high pressure distorts the shape of the optic nerve and destroys the nerve. Destroyed nerve cells result in blind spots in places where the image from the retina is not being transmitted to the brain. Bimatoprost works by decreasing intraocular pressure and may be considered for people with glaucoma that are unable to tolerate other IOP lowering drugs.
Most of the people suffering from glaucoma are not aware that they have this disease. It is also called as the silent thief of sight because the loss of vision normally occurs gradually over a long period of time and is often only recognized when the disease is quite advanced. The nerve damage involves loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern. There are many different sub-types of glaucoma but they can all be considered a type of optic neuropathy. One individual may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, while another individual may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage. This disease can be classified into two categories namely open-angle glaucoma and narrow-angle glaucoma.
Open-angle glaucoma is painless and does not have acute attacks. In this type of glaucoma, the angle between the iris and the cornea is open, allowing drainage of the aqueous humor. It is usually chronic and progresses slowly. Closed-angle glaucoma is characterized by sudden ocular pain, seeing halos around lights, red eye, very high intraocular pressure (>30 mmHg), nausea and vomiting, sudden decreased vision, and a fixed, mid-dilated pupil. Acute angle closure is an ocular emergency. In narrow-angle glaucoma, the angle where aqueous fluid drainage occurs is narrow, and therefore may drain slowly or may be at risk of becoming closed. A closed-angle glaucoma attack is usually acute, occurring when the drainage area is blocked. It usually occurs if the iris and lens suddenly adhere to each other and the iris is pushed forward. Congenital glaucoma occurs in babies and is the result of incomplete development of the eye's drainage canals during embryonic development. It can be corrected with microsurgery or with a combination of medicine and surgery. People with normal-tension glaucoma have optic nerve damage in the presence of normal IOP. The cause of vision loss in all forms of glaucoma is optic nerve damage.
