Treatments For Palmar Hyperhidrosis
Palmar hyperhidrosis has become one of common type of hyperhidrosis with one out of every two hundred people experiencing sweaty palms
. Palmar hyperhidrosis occurs on the inside of the hand or palms. Persons who suffer from palmar hyperhidrosis are embarrassed by it which causes them to shy away from shaking hands which in most parts of the world is a polite way to greet people. It is an essential socializing tool and with sweaty palms it makes such a normal and commonly used handshake turn into a embarrassing and stressful situation. Sweating on the palms of the hands can, hopefully, be lessened by a few treatments and therapy.
A few years ago, the only known treatment for hyperhidrosis was Endoscopic Thoracic Sympathectomy or also known as ETS. ETS is a surgery that may be a bit pricey for most persons but has been a successful treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis. During this surgery the hands of the patient are clamped and the sympathetic nerves that control the bodies sweating function are removed. Thus, these nerves will no longer be able to tell the body to sweat and hence be successful for persons suffering from hyperhidrosis. However, the bodies sweating function is a normal function and to stop it entirely may prove to be very dangerous. The body sweats to cool itself down, without that cooling mechanism the body will become overheated.
Another common therapy for palmar hyperhidrosis is Iontophoresis. This uses a liquid electrolyte solution that patients dip their hands into. A current is then transferred throughout the body, passing through the electrolyte. This shocks the sweat glands in the hands making then lessen the production of sweat. This simply means the glands in the hand will become a little less responsive to the body and less stimulated to sweat all the time. It is safe and non-invasive so persons do not have to worry about going under the knife.
Topical ointments and astringents have also been developed for persons who suffer from palmar hyperhidrosis. There are many solutions on the market today that claim to help excessive sweating but many of those ointments and astringents are made for hyperhidrosis under the arms and are misused by some persons. Because the hands are commonly needed, to feel, tough, pull, push, write or type something they will constantly come into contact with germs or abrasive things. Doctors highly recommend that topical solutions are not used to control palmar hyperhidrosis.
In rare instances Botulium Toxin most commonly known as Botox is used to help excessively sweating individuals. Botox is also considered a non-invasive treatment but is much more expensive than Iontophoresis. Botox is injected into infected areas of the skin, sometimes on the face, or under the arms and into the palms. When this occurs the sweat glands are blocked by the Botox and are not able to produce sweat on top of the skin. Botox is not a popular treatment for hyperhidrosis.
There are other solutions out there that help persons affected with palmar hyperhidrosis. Treatments such as anticholonergic medications and natural remedies. Whichever one you choose it is best to consult a medical professional before starting any type of regime or going into any type of surgery.
