Treatment Of The Emotional Problem Of Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are some of the most common problems encountered

. In our country, the most obvious treatment has been medication. As people with severe problems know, it can have limited benefit. In fact, the traditional medications (i.e., benzodiazipines) used for anxiety result in the development of tolerance. What many people probably dont know is that these medications create significant cognitive problems.

Studies in the past 10 years have revealed that benzodiazipines can lead to impairment not only in memory and concentration, but in most other areas measured by neuropsychological tests. In relation to what is termed effect sizes, the influence of benzodiazipines is comparable to moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries. Even after the medications are discontinued, long term users show residual problems for months or longer.

Given such facts, the exploration for alternative treatments is reasonable. The most commonly mentioned, empirically supported psychotherapy approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy. Commonly employed procedures are education, relaxation techniques, and exposure techniques.

A newer theoretical model that can explain the development and maintenance of the emotional problem of anxiety is based on a brain model. Being published in 2006, the model led to the development of Clinical Biopsychology, and one of its associated treatments, Emotional Restructuring. The first professional paper was published on this model in 2007.

It explains that anxiety as an emotional problem can emerge from three different time frames; past, present, and future. The first, negative emotional memories, is a major source of anxiety. For example, significant problems with a parent can result in later anxiety not only around that parent, but also with any authority figure, such as ones teacher or boss. Similarly, being picked on frequently in school can lead to anxiety around peers as an adult.

Ongoing situations can also create anxiety. Going into a court situation is something that most people would find quite stressful. Making a presentation to ones superiors is another situation that would lead many people to become anxious.

Future situations leading to the emotional problem of anxiety usually have a strong level of uncertainty. In fact, one definition of anxiety I have heard is that it is a fear of the unknown. In closing, it is important to know that there are new developments emerging and, hopefully one day, anxiety will become a less familiar entity.
