Treatment For Ringworm - How To Eliminate It and Prevent It From Spreading
Ringworm is a skin infection caused by a fungus
. It is generally easy to cure, but may also go out of hand if not given the right attention. Depending on the affected area, you may use a different treatment method or product for the face, the groin area, the scalp or the feet. It is highly important to treat ringworm as early as possible, since the patches can blister and become worse. Avoid further damage by treating the infection as early as possible. Below are some treatments used to combat ringworm and prevent it from spreading on the body.
Topical creams. Most anti-fungal creams work well against ringworm. By applying the cream twice a day for two to three weeks, the ringworm will be cured and eliminated. Look for creams which contain miconazole, clotrimazole, econazole, ketoconazole and terbinafine. As you apply on the affected area, include at least an inch beyond the diameter of the wound. This will prevent the fungus from spreading on your skin.
Systemic solutions. If a fungal infection does not react well to topical treatments, oral medicine can be used. Areas which may be hard to treat using creams include the nails and the scalp. It is best to consult a doctor before heading to the drugstore to purchase. You can be prescribed with griseofulyn, or other newer formulations which are as effective and are even safer. For systemic medications, the effectiveness is usually evident only after three months.
Antibiotics. Antibiotics should only be used when the skin had already been invaded by bacteria. This happens when the patches are not covered with bandages and are exposed to dirt and other harmful substances, thus the wound gets deeper and worse. Before taking any antibiotics, consult a doctor and wait for a prescription to make sure t hat you get the right drug.
Surgery. Severe cases of infection may require surgical procedures, especially if the infection had already gone deep into the skin.
Bandage. Cover the affected areas with bandages to avoid the fungus from spreading on your body. This also protects the wound from contracting other infection and bacteria. It may also protect the infection from getting scratched. Replace the bandage after every bath to ensure that it is clean and protected properly.
Prevention is always better than cure. To avoid getting ringworm, maintain proper hygiene and make sure that your area is clean and dry.
