A local shuttle travels around the island around NZ$5.00 per ride. If you want to rent a scooter you will need to get a local driving license (NZ$20) from the Police HQ in Avarua before you rent any vehicle. But there is very poor lighting on the roads at night time, so it is not recommended to drive after sundown. Sundays are devoted to church activities and it is common for businesses to open from 7 am to 10 am , then close and then reopen in the early evening.
Weather year round, temperatures range from 20 degree C to 26 degree C, the rainy period is from December to March where you can expect heavy downpours.
Main areas to stay are Rarotonga with beautiful mountainous green peaks. Avarua is the main town located on the north shore. Here you will find a selection of restaurants, pubs, souvenir stores and other retail shops. Dont miss the Saturday market where you find fresh produce and the noni juice.
On Atiu Island there are many tours that cover the history, ecology and exploration. Over 26 secluded beaches, caves to explore.
Aitutaki has turquoise blue lagoons surrounded by small islands and it is a water and fish paradise.
