Travelling with Small Children - a Driver's Checklist
When you have a new child, whether it is your first or a little brother or sister for your other children, you'll understandably be just as cautious and protective of them no matter what. At the same time you'll want to visit relatives, friends and occasionally go for a day out somewhere, so travelling in the car or when out and about is going to be something you'll want to prepare for. Having equipment like prams, Infant carriers and other travel systems ahead of time will be perfect and make travelling safe and convenient.
So what will you need when travelling with young children and babies?
Infant Carriers- This is one of the first things parents will buy when planning to travel with their child in a car or when going out. Allowing the baby to sleep or sit and be carried around easily will be important and some of these products will connect to prams or car seats meaning less disruption for the baby if they are sleeping.
Car Seats - Car seats come in many different shapes and sizes, as already mentioned many of these seats detach easily to carry the baby but some can be permanently fixed to the car via a secure fastening system. Front facing and rear facing seats are available but rear facing seats must not be used for the front passenger seat.
Prams and Buggies - Prams are used to wheel the baby around with many of them now coming with lightweight and collapsible frames so they can be stored in a car boot when travelling. A lot of prams these days allow the parent to store items such as a day bag containing vital supplies and even room for shopping as well.
Travel Cots - If you have gone camping or travelling somewhere that doesn't have baby sleeping facilities (hotels that do not have cots) then you can buy travel cots that fold out or can easily be built for a safe place to sleep when you are travelling.
Booster Seats - As your child grows they will eventually outgrow their child seat but will still be too short to use an adult seat with a proper seatbelt. A booster seat can be used and may even be a part of the original car seat, detaching to provide the necessary boost so the seatbelt is in a safe position on the child (i.e. not the neck or the head).
