Travellers in Thailand During Protests

If you're heading off to Thailand any time soon, it's a good idea to do a little preparation so you don't end up stumbling into an area that it's best you avoid. As Thailand is currently undergoing some intense political and social unrest, the country has become the subject of many warnings to travellers who are advised to take care when visiting.

Thailand is an incredible country with a vast variety of friendly locals - but that doesn't mean travellers shouldn't pay attention to their surroundings and the people around them while travelling through any area they do not know. Visitors have been advised to stay well away from the anti-government protests that are currently rippling through the nation as violence and disputes can break out quickly and easily.

Several people have been killed and well over a hundred injured since the beginning of the protests, and visitors to the country are warned to stay away from any circumstance or event that looks like it could become dangerous. That's not to say that everywhere is not safe; there are plenty of areas where it is safe to go out and explore, but you should take extra care to always be aware of where you are, what is in your surrounding area, the type of people around and never to linger too long before heading to your destination. It is best not to ask any of the locals about the situation as people can quickly become very passionate about what is going on. Areas where backpackers and holidaymakers should avoid are the Preah Vihear temple area, Yala, Pattani, Songkhla and Narathiwat, though other places are deemed generally safe and much calmer than these danger zones. Travellers are also advised to get the adequate insurance cover before travel and stay up to date with the news while they are in the country. It's also a good idea to learn where your nearest embassy is in case of emergency.

Travelling in Thailand is still perfectly safe in many places, though it's important to know where you ought to avoid. By simply staying away from the protest hot spots, however, you can still enjoy a completely safe, cultural and exciting trip to this magnificent country! Just make sure you stay connected with friends and family back home using international calling and you won't have to worry about your parents losing any sleep over wondering how safe you are. While these warnings should be paid attention to, Thailand is still largely safe and welcoming - so enjoy your trip!
