Travel To Siem Reap - One Of The Wonders Of The Asian Continent

Siem Reap is a busy town and popular destination for tourists coming from all around

the world to see the worlds famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

Hundreds of years ago, the Asian south east was part of the mighty Siam Empire and this is reflected in the towns current name, Siem Reap, which means literally "defeating the Siam" which describes the war which is depicted on the temples of the Angkor Wat Temple Complex.

During your travel to Siem Reap, you can spend a day by visiting some of the surrounding villages. One village worth visiting is Kompong Phhluk, about one hour away from Siem Reap by tuk-tuk. What makes Kompong Phhluk unique is that the entire village is built on high stilts as it is close to the river and the very large Tonle Sap Lake, where the water rises significantly during the rainy season and floods the entire countryside. Getting there requires a drive and even a boat ride if the water levels are high.

You can drink your night away at Pub Street, or pick a restaurant that offers an Apsara dancing show in the evening during the tour in Siem Reap. This is a traditional dancing style that incorporates slow movements, and is usually performed solo or in groups by men and women in traditional regalia. It's worth checking out if you have a free night.

Having a personal tuk-tuk driver is a travel to Siem Reap and Angkor Wat regardless of where you stay, as it is very difficult to get to town or the temples on your own, or more costly if you want to hire a driver separately for each excursion. Even within Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples, you will need a driver to take you from place to place as the temples are not within walking distance.

During the tour in Siem Reap, you will have no trouble finding a restaurant, there are hundreds of them. There are entire streets catering for tourists, selling a variety of international snacks and cuisine. You will find everything from fast food pizzas and burgers to the very traditional Cambodian curry. Many restaurants cater for vegetarians and food is very reasonably priced, in fact it's actually very cheap and even the more up market restaurants are very well priced, so it doesn't cost a lot to eat out. The hotels serve a variety of international foods but the best way to experience traditional Cambodian cuisine, like a fried hairy tarantula, is out in the towns and villages.
