There is a minimum age for drivers. Drivers have to be at least 21 years old, if under 25 they can still drive but they will have to pay a surcharge, which is paid locally when picking up the vehicle. Money: Although whilst in the US you can expect to pay for most things by credit card, you will also need some cash or travelers checks (in US dollars as few US banks operate currency exchange). Check with your bank before you go whether cash dispensers in the US will accept your cash card. Traveler's checks are more advisable for larger amounts. American Express, Thomas Cook, and Visa are widely accepted as cashed and any change will be given to you in 'hard currency'. You should try to have a good supply of smaller value checks, $10 and $20. Don't worry about signs that say 'No Checks', they mainly refer to personal checks. There is no 'Cheque Card Guarantee' scheme in the States.
Passports: It's very important that you make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your proposed departure date. US Immigration ca be extremely severe!
Visas: Citizens of most European countries, as well as New Zealand and Australia do not need a visa for stays of fewer than 90 days. However, you will need to fill out a 'visa waiver' form, usually given to you on the plane. It will ask for your intended departure date and where you're staying on your first night. The form will be processed and attached to your passport on your arrival. No not remove it. It covers you for entry into Mexico and Canada as well and will be removed on departure.
