Travel Suitcase - 6 Packing Tips
It seems that most of us actually dread packing our suitcases. Despite weeks of thought, we go one way or another pack enough clothes for a month, yet we're only travelling for a long weekend, or the other extreme, going away for a couple of weeks and only taking a couple of outfits so not having nearly enough when we arrive.
The stresses and woes of what to pack, and how to pack, can worry even the most experienced traveller. So whilst it goes without saying that you should only pack what you really need and no, that does not include the kitchen sink! it's worth take a moment to read through some tips and advice in this short and helpful guide to packing your suitcase effectively!
1.Label your luggage
With over 42 million suitcases a year being mislaid by airlines it's important, that should your case be a statistic, you aren't caught short. If you're travelling with companions then it's a good idea to mix all your clothes up in each other's cases. That way, if one case goes missing you'll still have some clothes to wear from the other cases. But don't lose faith if your suitcase is lost, 85% of all luggage is located within 48 hours. Don't forget, as well as your external luggage label, place one inside your case too it's easy for the external label to be ripped off, leaving your case unidentifiable.
2.Pack Light, Wear Heavy
If you're concerned about your case being too heavy then consider wearing your heaviest clothes instead of packing them. Wear jeans, trainers, heavy jumpers; even coats. You don't have to wear them; you can carry them and store them in the luggage holds in the aircraft. It could save you valuable space and weight in your case!
3.Rolling, not folding
Another clever little trick when packing is to roll your clothes, instead of folding them. By doing this you will not only have more space in your case as rolled clothes take up less space, but also they will be less creased. And for wrinkle free clothing roll each item in tissue paper! Especially useful if you have a special outfit packed for a special occasion whilst you are away.
4.Hotel Facilities
It's also worth checking to see what facilities and services your accommodation provides. For example, if they provide beach towels then you won't need to pack your own (heavy and bulky) ones, freeing up valuable weight and space. Check to see if they provide hairdryers and irons.
5.Washed and Wet
And don't just think about what you need to wear when packing. Think about what you might need too. For example, packing re-sealable plastic bags is a very good idea. You can use these to store wet and dirty clothes, keeping them separate from your cleaner clothes, especially if you're visiting more than one location on your travels.
6.Some Handy bits & bobs'
Now, whilst you to pack the kitchen sink, there are a few things that are worth packing, and actually they don't really take up any space...
Pegs - it's worth considering packing some pegs. This way you can hang up any wet or washed clothing outside without it blowing away. They also come in handy if your room is too light for your liking use the pegs to hang up spare sheets to act as blackouts.
A pen and some paper whether it's to write a list for the supermarket if you're self-catering, or writing a postcard, a pen and paper is a travel essential!
A travel umbrella whilst a summer holiday does not conjure up images of downpours, the odd shower in the summer months is actually more common than you may think. A small, light-weight brolly will be just the job to save you from being stuck in your room until it clears!
A small travel alarm clock whether you need to be up for a certain time, or simply not to miss dinner, a travel alarm clock will come in very handy! Especially if you have a very early morning pick up for your flight home!
