Somnath Temple, situated near Veraval on the western coast of Gujarat
, is one of the holiest pilgrimage spots for the Hindus. Located on the confluence of the mythological Saraswati, Hiranya and Kapila Rivers, Somnath Temple has one of the twelve Jyotirlings or religious Shiva shrines of India. The place got its name from the Somnath temple. The references to the Temple can be found in ancient texts like Rig Veda, Skandpurana, Bhagavat Geeta and Shivpurana. Historical facts, however, reveal that the Yadava kings of Vallabhi had erected the second temple by around 649 AD. After that the temple was destroyed several times by invaders to plunder wealth. The temple was rebuilt after every attack.Triveni Ghat and Bhalka Teerth are the major pilgrim centres in Somnath. As per legends, it was at Bhalka Teerth where Lord Krishna was hit by an arrow. Dwarka, another place connected with the life of Lord Krishna, is situated at a distance of about 231 km from Somnath. Dwarka is located on the tip of the Saurashtra peninsula on the Arabian Sea. The name Dwarka means gateway to the spiritual union with Brahma.
According to legend, Dwarka was submerged in water after the death of Lord Krishna and the demise of the Yadava Dynasty. It is believed that Dwarka was rebuilt six times by different civilisations and the present-day Dwarka is the seventh one. Archeologists of the Marine Archeology Unit discovered the immersed township of Dwarka during their explorations which were conducted in 19831990.
The main religious and tourist attraction in Dwarka is Dwarkadheesh Temple or Jagat Temple. The present day temple was built in the 16th century. Nageshwar Mahadev, Rukmini Temple and Gomati Ghat Temples are among the other popular pilgrim centres in Dwarka. It was also the seat of Adi Shankaracharya, who established four maths in four different parts of India.There is no airport at Somnath or Dwarka. Veraval is the nearest railway station to Somnath. Veraval is situated some distance away from Somnath. Dwarka has a railway station. Since both the religious centres are not properly connected by rail, the train journey from Somnath to Dwarka is cumbersome.
The main mode of travel from Somnath to Dwarka is by road. The main places on the route from Somnath to Dwarka are Chorwad, Mangrol, Porbandar and Navadra. The road is very good. The Journey by car takes about five hours to reach Dwarka from Somnath. Taxi charges range from Rs.10 to Rs.25 per kilometre depending on the vehicles the travellers hire. On the other hand, the bus journey takes more than six hours. The bus terminal is at Mithapur, 21 km from the Dwarka centre. The travellers will have to take car from here to Dwarka.
