A business cannot be run single handedly by one person. The founder of the business has to employ people under him who can manage, supervise, report back and perform the actual manual job as well. This means a business organization will comprise of the owner, leader, manager as well as employees. A union or formation of a welfare group of employees is what is meant by a trade union. This union is responsible for looking out for the welfare and the best interests of the employee and a leadership committee usually heads it.
The history of trade unions dates back to the guild system in Europe where an organization sought to protect some professions by controlling advancement and skill of mastery. Although the guild cannot directly be compared to a labor union today, it can be safely called the forerunner or a union.
The Industrial Revolution in Europe which took place in the 18th century put the new laborer in the work force. He previously stayed at home and hence when he was put to work in an industry, he wanted his rights to better wages and improvement of working conditions. The National Labor Union was the first official trade union of America which came into existence in the 19th century and since then these unions have not looked back.
Conflicts and disagreements should be handled by both parties with keeping in mind the vested interests of both parties. Choosing a good and well informed union leader will not only hold the union together, but the employees can rest assured that their leader will only do what is best for them.
A union is formed by the employees in almost all major business houses and companies for the lookout of the interests of the employees. Employee participation and concern for the well being of the employees assures success for any organization and when the management themselves provide for a union for their employees, and then the latter know that their interests are being considered and looked after.
