Lugu Lake is known as Mother Lake, for remembering a mother, who carried her 2 children into a hog-trough before the flood rushing toward them, unfortunately, the mother was buried underwater, and her 2 children escaped from the disaster. They afterwards became ancestors here. For commemorating the great mother, people use the whole wood to make a Hog-trough Boat, which becomes the only and unique transportation for Mosuo People living here.
Lugu Lake strides across 2 provinces of China, 280 km from Lijiang city of Yunnan province, where occupies the area of one-thirds and Sichuan province occupies the area of two-thirds. Known as "Pearl of the Plateau", Lugu Lake reaches the total area of more than 50 square km. with the altitude of 2690 meters, the average water depth of 45 meters. The deepest place reaches over 90 meters, and the transparency is highly up to 11 meters, so the lake is called an uncontaminated Virgin Lake by local people.
There are five islands, three peninsulas and one seawalls connecting island scattering in the lake, just like green boats when looking from a distance with various shapes, and verdant forests. The lake is limpid like a mirror, perfectly integrating with the sky. Algal booms embellishing the lake, hop-trough boats slipping upon the green waves unhurriedly, Mosuo folk song echoing between the water and the sky, further add some primitive simplicity and tranquility.
Lugu Lake has the most beautiful natural shape, and is encircled by green mountains. 17 sand-beaches formed by alluviation and 14 bays twisting gracefully, become a natural resort for the tourists. On the rear mountain of Sanjia village in the southeast the lake, there is a secluded valley wriggling down with gurgling springs, where hides a small and delicate "BodhisattvaHole". It is a wonderful place for tourists to enjoy the cool and take in the full beauty for the splendid sceneryof the secluded valley.
