Tourist Activities in Cambridge

The quaint and historic city of Cambridge is the perfect place for a a relaxing holiday in a friendly and quiet locale that offers much to do and see for any traveler. Cambridge, of course, is best known for its universities and the life of the city is definitely centered around them, but there are a lot of other reasons to visit the lovely city on the banks of the river Cam.

The world-famous buildings that make up the skyline of Cambridge include the Cambridge University Library and King's College Chapel, and the city has many fine examples of Gothic architecture and buildings from other schools of design. The river Cam winds through the city, and the banks of the river are lined with gardens along the university grounds. These areas behind the learning institutes are called "the backs" and make for pleasant wandering along the river.

The best and most popular way to see the river is in a "punt". A punt is a flat-bottomed boat that is propelled by the use of a stick pushed against the shallow bottom, and punting is one of the activities Cambridge is famous for. During the warm months, the river can even become crowded with punters and anyone visiting Cambridge should definitely give it a go. It's a bit trickier than it looks, but that's half the fun.

Cambridge has several museums and historical attractions that are well worth a visit. The Fitzwilliam Museum hosts an important antiquities collection and also houses many masterpieces of European art, including works by Titian, Picasso, Rubens, Degas, Renoir and many others. Other fine museums include Kettle's Yard, which contains many important pieces and hosts exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, and the Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences, the oldest Museum at Cambridge.

Cambridge has a variety of lodging options including a hostel, several guest houses, bed & breakfasts and luxury hotels. One of the best places to stay is the Doubletree Cambridge Hilton Hotel, which is located on the river Cam. The Doubletree Hilton Cambridge is offering a "Punting Break Special" package that includes a punting trip down the river, two nights at the hotel, a free dinner and other amenities at a special price. The offer runs through Dec. 31st.
