Statistics released by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have highlighted a reduction in the number of people travelling to and from the UK in the first 9 months of 2010.

Taken from a random selection of travellers entering and leaving the UK by sea, air and via the Channel Tunnel, figures provided to the ONS from the International Passenger Survey show an overall drop in both passenger numbers and the amount spent.

In September, 2.48 million visits to the UK were made compared with nearly 2.56 million in September 2009, the Office for National Statistics said.

Spending has also seen an impact with foreign tourists spending around 1.43bn in the UK this September. That's around 12% down on the September 2009 figures.

Meanwhile, statistics show that the number of trips abroad by UK residents has also decreased, with more people than ever choosing to holiday at home. Figures show that in the first nine months of 2010, UK residents made 43.6 million trips abroad - 7% fewer than in the same period last year.

In addition to the reduction of trips made abroad, figures suggest that spending by UK travellers abroad had also fallen to around 24.94 billion, a 3% dip on the same nine-month period in 2009.

With the Christmas season fast approaching, travel agents, airlines, ferry operators and retailers are hoping to see a last minute surge in travel and retail, providing a welcome boost to revenues and making some gains on the depressed figures for the year to date.
