As the Capital of Spain, Madrid enjoys the highly reputable position of being the
forerunner in politics, finance, administration and services making it a highly cosmopolitan state. Madrid is filled with history and architectural marvels with important heritage and artistic culture. Madrid is located 646 meters above sea level and is centrally located in the Iberian Peninsular. Madrid is an exemplary capital where the old architecture blends perfectly well with the modern day art and infrastructure.It was King Philip II who proclaimed Madrid to be the capital of Spain during his reign, although there have been settlements in Madrid well before 1561. Madrid de los Austrias (the Hapsburg Empire) is an old town filled with history and reminds one of the lifestyle during the 15th and 16th century. So is the Plaza Mayor or the square which is a must visit for every tourist visiting Madrid and is considered one of Madrid's hot spots. Near the Plaza Mayor is an old Baroque and classically styled structure of the 17th century which is also home to the Royal Palace. The Almudena Cathedral which in 1993 was consecrated by Pope John Paul II and the Opera house are closely located to the Royal Palace. The square is complete with other monumental structures like the Paseo del Arte along with the Bank of Spain building and the Palacio de las Telecomunicaciones ( which is currently occupied by the Postal office) not forgetting the sprightly Neptuno and Cibeles fountains.
There are approximately 73 museums in total in Madrid all catering to different areas of knowledge and amongst them is the Prado museum which is one of the greatest art galleries of the world. You will also find exclusive art galleries that showcase the contemporary art of Spain like the Reina Sofia National Art Centre that displays art work by famous artists like Salvador Dali, Picasso, Juan Giris and many more. Madrid also has huge parks that are impeccable, where one can feed the smaller garden animals, go rowing or just walk and enjoy the greenery. Madrid is rated as one of the greenest capitals because of Juan Carlos I Park, Casa de Campo and the Retiro Parks which was once where the Spanish Monarchs enjoyed a game or two.
Madrid has a nice warm subtle climate which is reflected in the attitude of its people who are warm, friendly and accommodating. Several concerts, ballets, exhibitions, movie releases and selected theatre productions are often held in Madrid, making it a hub for the entertainment industry. Madrid has a variety of scrumptious cuisine that is traditional while one will also find places where international food is served, along with food there are several bars, pubs and night clubs that make up for the equally exciting nightlife.
Fashion conscious people will find stores that store designer brands alongside traditional establishments which makes it a fashion destination and shoppers paradise. The Faunia theme park is where children can enjoy with bio diversity; there is also the zoo-aquarium at Casa de Campo where kids can learn a lot about nature and science. Outside Madrid there are many towns to visit, we recommend that you hire a car at Madrid Airport and visit places like Aranjuez, Toldeo, Segovia or Salamanca which are beautiful.
