Touring Berlin - The Largest German City

Touring Berlin - The Largest German City

Touring Berlin, the largest German city, would be a spectacular experience already if you were to visit Germany

. This capital city has endless attractions for tourists: from museums to restaurants, from hot spots to night clubs. In fact, you might even have trouble finding the time to travel the entire city considering the numerous places worthy of your visit.

If you don't have the luxury of time to go around the city, let me give you an idea about the activities that you can do while staying there. Here are the ten that top my list:

1. Visiting the symbolic Branderburg Gate. This is the most recognisable landmark of Berlin and was patterned after Athens' Acropolis. Located in the "no man's land" between the east and west Walls, this not-to-be-missed sight has been symbolic of the country's division and reconciliation.

2. Looking back in time through the Berlin Wall. Retracing history is inevitable once you set foot in Berlin. As you move around the city, you can't help but relive the country's past through Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Wall Memorial, and East Side Gallery. Checkpoint Charlie is once the site of the worst tension and violence in history. But how ironic it turned out that it's now Germany's popular tourist venue. While you get through the entire checkpoint, think of how difficult it was for those who weren't able to cross compared to how easy you do it now.Touring Berlin - The Largest German City

3. Exploring the Museum Island. With the multi-visit ticket you can buy there, spend a day with the best museums in the city and feel the atmosphere of ancient Babylon, the Byzantine Empire or the Greco-Turkish cities.

4. Having a picnic at the Tiergarten. Commune with nature in this large green park at the heart of Berlin. Aside from getting the calm that you need, you'll also get a glimpse of German history via some historical monuments. One of those is that of "The Ironed Chancellor" Otto von Bismarck himself.

5. Star-gazing and Berlin Film Festival. This festival is done yearly in which thousands of film professionals and journalists from 120 countries take part. With celebrities from different nations flocking in the city, this is said to be the most anticipated event of every year.

6. Experiencing Berlin's night life. Don't you know that German beer is recognised in the world for its fine quality? Berlin has a lot of clubs if you want to enjoy the night. Not missing the night in the city means not missing a wide array of beer and other drinks.

7. Enjoying a live football match at the Olympic Stadium. Berlin is like a paradise for every footballer and this second biggest stadium in Germany is often the site where you can catch the game. The sport is so popular that there are more than 20 clubs within the city alone. While in Berlin, it would be great if you don't miss watching Berlin's own Hertha BSC Berliner.

8. Shopping at KaDeWe. Shop till you drop at this second largest department store in Continental Europe. Just a tip: most small shops close at 8:00 PM but some larger department stores extend their hours until 9:00 or 10:00 PM on selected nights.Touring Berlin - The Largest German City

9. Catching the music of Berlin. Berlin Orchestra is not something to be missed once you're here. Seven symphony orchestras are regularly performing to give you a taste of Berlin's musical prowess.

10. Tasting the traditional currywurst. Yes. Currywurst is probably the essential food of Berlin. Don't forget to order some of this German sausage with a spicy curry tomato sauce that was invented in Berlin itself. Add it with some mustard and pommes frites (French fries) on the side and you're good to go!

These are the things that sum up the Berlin experience. If you've got limited time to travel in the biggest German city, follow the suggested activities above so you can enjoy your trip without missing the real Berlin experience.
