Mammals' That can be Seen at These National Parks & Game Reserves in East Africa

The mammals that can be seen in these national parks and game reserves in East Africa especially Kenya & Tanzania are as follows,

Bongo

A very striking antelope with a bright chestnut upper coat and dark almost black underside. The body from shoulder to rump is conspicuously marked with yellow-white vertical stripes, usually 12-14 in number. There is a crescent shaped stripe across the base of the neck. The ears are outlined with white hair and on the cheeks there are 2 or 3 white patches. There is also a white stripe on the bridge of the muzzle in front of the eyes. The legs have a broken pattern of irregular black, white and chestnut patches .The horns are large, ranging from 60-100cm in length, have a single spiral and vary in colour from light grey to black. They are less well developed in the female. The white tail is of medium length, terminating in a tuft of black hairs.

An antelope of the densest mountain forests. Being very secretive and mainly nocturnal in habits makes this species one of the most difficult of the large mammals to see. They feed usually in dense cover, on leaves, shoots and the flowers of trees and bushes, occasionally grasses and herbs as well as roots which they unearth with their horns. They will sometimes stand on hind legs to reach higher foliage, using their long tongue to grasp bunches of leaves. They readily use saltlicks and require a constant supply of water throughout the year. The Aberdare Mountains of Kenya remains one of the best areas to see bongo. During the dry season they will move higher into the mountains, (2,500m or higher), usually dispersing to lower elevations during the wet season.

Wildebeest

A large antelope with forequarters higher than hindquarters giving the appearance of a pronounced slope' from the front to rear.Greyish in colour with a long mane of black hair on the neck and shoulders and a long beard of hair on the neck and throat, the coloration of the beard varies greatly from almost pure white to black. The neck, shoulders and, to a lesser extent, the flanks show dark vertical stripes. The head is large and broad with a completely black face. The horns are present in both sexes, measuring between 40-73cm in length and from a flat base curve outwards, downward then upward, not dissimilar in shape to those of the Cape Buffalo. The black bushy-tipped tail is extremely long almost touching the ground.Tour To East Africa Major Wildlife Destinations,Maasai Mara,Serengeti,Ngorongoro,Aberdares,Kilimanjaro by Flights

An extremely common antelope of open grassland and lightly wooded regions where it gathers in enormous herds during its annual migration in a continual search for fresh grazing. This circular, seasonal migration from the southern Serengeti to the Maasai Mara and back covers a distance in excess of 800km and at times columns of animals stretch for 40km. They eat mainly grass and are water dependent drinking twice a day if possible. They are active throughout the day usually attempting to rest or seek shade during the hot midday period. The females synchronize their calving with 80% of young being born during a three-week period usually towards the beginning of the rainy season(Feb-March) .To avoid predation the females and newborn need to remain mobile and to this end the calves are on their feet within 3-7 minutes of birth. This synchronized calving produces an abundance of food for predators, but over a short period, thereby ensuring the survival of the majority.

Thomson Gazelle

Medium-small in size this delicate gazelle is sandy-rufous in colour, darker along the back and paler on the head, neck, lower flanks and rump. The chest, belly and insides of the legs are pure white. A very conspicuous thick black band extends horizontally from the top of the forelegs across the flanks to the thighs. The buttocks are white bordered by a thin black stripe. The forehead and centre of the muzzle are dark rufous brown: broad bands of white hair extend from the base of the ears through the eyes to the tip of the muzzle. A black stripe extends from the eyes down the cheeks to the corners of the mouth. The lips, chin and throat are white .The horns are deeply ringed and quite long, up to 40cm or more, they are only slightly curved and are much reduced in the female. They have short black tail.

A common antelope of open plains and grasslands, named after the explorer Joseph Thomson who first saw the species in Kenya in 1883. They live in herds of one dominant male with, on average, 6-60 females, but during certain periods of the year, usually the dry season, they gather into herds of many thousands, mixing with other ungulates. They feed almost exclusively on grasses, only occasionally browsing from trees and bushes. They will drink daily when water is readily available but can survive for long periods without. They are most active during the early morning and late afternoon and evening. Newborn calves remain hidden between periods of suckling and in open country their coloration and the ability to freeze' makes them extremely difficult to detect. The young grow rapidly being weaned within two months.
