Tough Questions For Your Doctor Before Lipo

Tough Questions For Your Doctor Before Lipo

Asking if your doctor is certified is important to ask because any doctor preparing

to do this procedure on you should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This means that the doctor has had to go through further training and residency, which can last as many as eight years. So, with a certified doctor, you can be sure that you are in fully competent hands.

How Many Times Have You Done This Procedure?

Though the training is intensive, you also want to know that this doctor has performed the surgery a number of times. This is not a procedure that you want done by a "rookie." Not only should this number be high, but he or she should be performing it regularly in present time.

How Many of Your Patients Have Had Complications? Tough Questions For Your Doctor Before Lipo

While an exact number is not necessarily required, your doctor should be able to give you details about complications that have occurred and how they were handled. Also, he or she should have a fairly high success rate. You don't want to be in the hands of someone that experiences frequent complications.

How Long Will It Take For Me to Recover?

You doctor should be able to provide detailed information about recovery, such as what activities will be acceptable at specific points in time after the surgery. You don't want to harm yourself or increase the chances for serious complications, so having this sort of information up front will help you better prepared for post-op.

What results can I expect?

You don't want a specific answer. No two people are exactly the same and so the results will vary. However, your doctor should be able to give you a good idea of the results he or she is aiming to achieve, as well as potential risks, complications, and side effects that could play against an ideal outcome.

Have you ever been disciplined by the board or by the state?

You want to know if your doctor has had any prior offenses, how, and why the situation occurred. Sometimes the explanation will be understandable, but in most cases you might want to shy away from those who have had disciplinarian action taken against them. Use your best judgment.

Have you ever, or would you ever perform correction surgeries?

You don't want to hear no. You want to know that if something goes wrong for some reason, that your doctor will be willing to correct the problem. You may also want to discuss the cost of that secondary procedure.

Are there any reasons that I would not be a good candidate?

This topic should absolutely come up in your discussion, because while a pre-exam will likely be performed, your doctor's remarks may trigger information that you wouldn't have thought to share otherwise.

What types of medications will I be given?

Ask this question, especially if you are sensitive to certain pain medications, or if you have allergies. This is a good time to discuss alternatives that will make the healing process easier and more comfortable.
