Indian Peafowl

A symbol of love in India, the Indian Peafowl is one of the countrys most iconic animals, alongside the Bengal Tiger. Travel almost anywhere in the country and you will be able to see their brilliant blue-green plumage, whether in inhabited areas or forests.

There are two woodpeckers that come at the top of many birders lists when travelling in the Indian Subcontinent. One is the White-Naped Woodpecker, which can be seen in open forest or scrubland - with its red crest and golden wings it is a striking sight in any setting. The other is the Great Slaty Woodpecker; it is the largest known species of woodpecker and is most often found in primary forests, notable for its dark grey plumage, long neck, and the chisel-like end of its beak. To see both, as well as a chance of sighting a Tiger, travel to Suklaphanta Wildlife Reserve which, with its extensive grasslands, is generally a great area to see birds.

Fire-Tailed Myzornis

Widely considered to be one of Indias most beautiful birds, the Fire-Tailed Myzornis measures just 12 centimetres and is a treat to behold, flying through the forest in brilliant green flocks with flashing red tail feathers.

Blue-Bearded Bee-Eater

Attractive for both their appearance and colouring, Blue-Bearded Bee-Eaters are known for their courting rituals and hunting techniques the latter involving provoking bees into chasing the birds, and then picking them off from the air. Its feathers range from elegant pale green to olive colours, with a tuft of blue at the throat.

Indian Skimmer

As well as being a good place to look for the water-loving Bengal Tiger, travel to areas with pools, lakes or rivers is a great way to see the birdlife that thrives around water. One species that is always a joy to watch is the Indian Skimmer, marked by stark black and white feathers and a bright orange beak, which it uses to skim through the water as it hunts.
