Tips To Better Understand Your Adhd Child

Parenting a child with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

, or ADHD, can be challenging. It requires, first and foremost, patience, as a child with ADHD is usually in a state of constant motion and has a hard time listening to instructions. Here are a few tips for parents to improve their relationship with their ADHD child, and help that child reach his or her full potential.

First, you must understand that your child has a neurobiological and behavioral disorder. ADHD is an actual physical and psychological disorder that is just as frustrating for the child as it is for adults interacting with the child. Like many special needs children, your ADHD child can greatly benefit from extra attention and physical contact. Be generous with your hugs and kisses. Devote time daily to playing with your child.

When you communicate with your child, put yourself at their eye-level. Speak clearly and slowly, and ask the child to repeat your instructions to make sure he or she truly understands what you are saying. When your child misbehaves, inform them immediately and explain why the behavior is unacceptable. Offer suggestions for acceptable behavior. Offer warnings before taking disciplinary action and be both specific and realistic about the consequences he or she will face if the bad behavior continues. Be consistent.

Your child's teacher should be informed of an ADHD diagnosis. Discuss with the teacher ways he or she can help your child have the best learning experience while at school. If necessary, enroll your child into a school that specializes in special education. At home, create a routine, especially where homework is concerned.

Remove any distracting objects from your child's homework/learning area. Make yourself available to help your child, should he or she have any questions about their schoolwork. Take play breaks as often as needed to avoid growing agitation and/or frustration. Read to and with your child often, at least once a day. Let your child choose his or her own books. Try to make learning and reading a fun activity.

It can be difficult for a child with ADHD to socialize normally. Observe your child's behavior around other children, especially his or her friends. When inviting friends over to play, only invite one or two at a time to avoid chaos and confusion. Don't allow violent behavior, such as pushing, yelling, or hitting. When the children play nicely with each other, be sure to reward them often.

With some extra love and patience, you can greatly improve your relationship with your ADHD child.
