Tips For Keeping Your Dog Cool In The Summer

Tips For Keeping Your Dog Cool In The Summer

We set an all-time record this past July for having the hottest average temperature ever for that month

. That was not just a state record, that was a national record also. Yes, it was the hottest July ever recorded for any state.

We have a wide variety of temperatures in are state. Only eight months ago we had temperatures of -23. Recently, we had temperatures on a regular basis above 110. One day it was even 114 on the porch in the shade. Our four dogs really hated it. Of course they are somewhat pampered and get more shelter and breaks from the heat than most dogs. Some of them are allowed to come in the house and spent significant time inside. Others have a room attached to the home which has its own small air-conditioning unit which they get to stay in during the hottest times of the day. They really enjoy air-conditioning as much as we do. If at all possible, you will be doing your dogs a huge favor if you too can share some of your air-conditioning with them on the hottest days.

If having your dog in the house to cool off with the AC is not possible, there are some things you can do outside to make life more bearable on those hot summer days for your canine. We have one of those small plastic kiddie pools which we purchased at Walmart for under $10. We keep it under a tree filled with water were the dogs can both drink out of it and also like in it if they choose. We have one dog that really enjoys laying down in the cool water. The others can to just stand in it soaking their feet and drinking. Either way, it's a good way for them to cool off and have a break from the heat.

Two of our dogs always sleep outside at night. Since many times it was still over 100 when it got dark, our night simply did not cooldown very much. For these dogs I always used the water hose to soak down an area where I know they like to sleep. It's amazing how cool the surroundings are when you keep a spot like this wet on a regular basis. They will dig some small holes getting into even cooler soil and then sleep there. They really appreciate the coolness from the damp ground.Tips For Keeping Your Dog Cool In The Summer

Also, one of our dogs has very long and shaggy hair. We try our best to keep him trimmed up in the summertime which not only helps the tangles from stickers and briars but also keeps them cooler. We don't take him anywhere for professional trimming; we simply do it ourselves with a pair of scissors. He may not be the prettiest and best groomed dog in the neighborhood but he is cooler and appreciates the thinner coat in the summer months.

Most of all during the hot days of summer make sure that your dogs have plenty of fresh and cool water to drink. A dog can drink an amazing amount of water when it's hot. Always have it available to them at all hours of the day whether they are in the house or outside.
