By definition a destination wedding is simply a wedding ceremony that is conducted far away from the bride and groom area of residence

. Destination weddings have in modern times taken a flair of their own and most happen in some of the most EXOTIC and magnificent spots in the world. The popularity of destination weddings can be largely attributed to the exotic settings that deviate from the traditional. Destination weddings also offer the newly weds an opportunity to treat their guests to unique experience.

Since destination weddings involve traveling away from home, the bridal couple and their guests usually require sufficient time to plan and prepare. Due diligence is also advised of the bridal couple and their guests; this may involve doing some research just like one would for the traditional wedding.

To help you get started, I've prepared a destination wedding time line. Feel free to adapt it to your needs. These time line is simply a countdown to the actual wedding day and shows what you ought to do at each stage.

1 year to the wedding

* Create a budget and stick to it.

* Get a wedding binder. Use it to organize ideas, photos, and correspondence etcetera. It should be easily accessible.

* Get wedding insurance cover to protect your special day.

* Create a guest list. Be careful about inviting people and make sure you can cater to the number you invite. Allow the guests to choose whether they want to travel or not.

* Hire the services of a wedding planner/consultant if you're getting married outside of your country. Ensure that the planner is specialized in destination weddings.

11 Months to the wedding

* Create a profile of the type of destination wedding you fancy.

* Conduct thorough research of the locations prior to booking. Note things like distance from airport to hotel, weather e.t.c.

10 months to the wedding

* Make destination wedding planning trip, if necessary

9 Months to the wedding

* Assemble documents necessary for the marriage to take place.

* Make travel arrangements to the destination wedding site, if possible.

* Book the lodging accommodations for wedding attendants.

* Make your own travel arrangements for the wedding

8 Months to the wedding

* Register for gifts

* Decide on the style, formality and colors of wedding

* Consider style of stationery, invitations

7 Months to the wedding

* Select your wedding gown

* Choose and order bridesmaids wedding dresses

* Order groom and groomsmen attire

* Shop for wedding rings

6 Months to the wedding

* Make final selections on wedding cake baker, florists and decor.

* Work on ceremony details and buy any necessary items

* Finalize menu and wedding cake order

5 Months to the wedding

* Buy fiance's gift (optional)

* Order favors (optional)

* Buy gifts for wedding attendants and parents

3 Months to the wedding

* Update your budget

* Review contracts again and familiarize yourself with arrival times, etc.

2 Months to the wedding

* Start creating seating charts. Yes, it is hard but it must be done.

* Call guests who have not yet responded

1 Month to the wedding

* Release any unnecessary rooms

* Finalize all wedding day itineraries

* Confirm travel arrangements with the hotel/resort

3 Weeks to the wedding

* Send out emails to wedding providers who have been contracted to finalize the details.

3 Days to the wedding

* Arrive at wedding destination

* Meet with banquet manager

* Review details once more
