Time Management For Children
Teaching our children how to manage their time will affect their lives, both now and in the future. As parents, we train our children so many life skills, but sometimes time management is one that we overlook. Maybe we even fall short in that area ourselves. How do we go about teaching this crucial ability to our sons and daughters? Here are a few tips that may help. Remember to keep their ages and abilities in mind as you apply these.
1. Toddlers and Preschoolers

Share: Make a game out of it when possible. For example, if you want them to pick up their toys that are in the middle of the floor and put them in the toy box, set a timer. Make sure you are giving them a reasonable amount of time for the task. Let them race against themselves to beat the timer. Praise them for even trying. Don't scold. You could also give them a little prize, such as a sticker on a chart or even a hug and a compliment.
2. Elementary Age Children
At this age, you can have a discussion about controlling their time, and the consequences if it is not followed properly. Some natural consequences may come into play here. For example, you may have a rule that their homework is to be done before their favorite television show. If they have dawdled and not completed the assignments for school, they simply can't watch the show. Time Management For Children
3. Teenagers
Teenagers are starting to live out the life skills they need to be responsible adults. Again, talk this out with them. Consequences may also need to be enforced. Poor time management that results in low grades or not doing chores around the house may call for some disciplinary action, such as limiting privileges. They should also be taught to be home at the time you have set for them for their own safety's sake, and for your peace of mind.
For teens, stress that in a few short years, they will be in college or on their own. They need to learn to take responsibility, so they don't fall apart when they are away from home. Very intelligent young adults have failed out of college because they simply couldn't manage their time. Don't forget to model the importance of the skill yourself. Make sure that you are exhibiting good self-discipline in your life.
Don't be afraid to start now, whatever the age of your child, to teach good time management. He or she may resist at first, but you will be fostering a skill that will enable your son or daughter to be more successful throughout life.
