Three Card Brag - A Challenge To Online Poker?

Three Card Brag - A Challenge To Online Poker?

Poker has had more than its share of the online gaming market for quite a while now

. Big names such as Full Tilt and PKR, are now recognized brand names, and whether you play poker or not, you will know who they are and what they do. The question is, is there a contender to Poker's crown as king of online gaming, and, is its name 3 card brag?

Any contender that thinks they've got what it takes to take a shot at poker's title will need to play their best hand. So, how could this be done? A marketing exercise? Bearing in mind poker's grip on the media, it would have to be one hell of a campaign to get anywhere near poker's media market share.

There is something telling in this though, you would think that someone as successful as PKR would not need to constantly bombard us with advertising. However, the more well known a product such as online poker becomes, the more competition increases, and the tighter the profit margins become, which may signal a media burn out which will sort the 'wheat out from the chaff'.

When this situation arises, then an opening may appear for another product of the same genre. In the same way that free bingo appeared, online gaming networks need to constantly seek out new angles otherwise they run the risk of becoming stale. And while you may be happy with your online gaming site, you can guarantee that your competitors will be looking for ways to better you.

Is the market there? Brag is huge on the Indian subcontinent (under the names of Teen Patti and Flush), probably a result of its British colonial links. India itself is the second most populous country in the world, with a burgeoning economy as well. In short, although not one of the richest countries in the world as a gaming market, it has potential particularly if the product is branded in cultural terms that will not alienate the target group - in other words it would be brag, but maybe by a different name.

Whether it would take off in other non US regions is questionable. Forex is very popular in the middle east and other areas, but from a psychological point of view, it a very different kettle of fish - you are not playing against the bank, or other players - so card based skills such as bluff become irrelevant.

Australia might be a different proposition, as although the population is not huge, it is relatively affluent, and more importantly, they are gambling mad over there. Their cultural alignment may be a difficult hurdle to overcome though, as although many of the population is largely of British descent, and the Queen is still recognized, there is strong anti-British sentiment evident. But, then again, the Australians are not to keen on the Americans either, and that hasn't stopped them playing poker.

Before launching into an international advertising campaign though, for a gaming platform to veer off in even a slightly new direction there is always an element of risk involved. The software needs tweaking, mind you 'tweak' would be considered a bit of an understatement by any programmer given the task. Programming takes time, needs testing, all of which add up to cost. At this stage it might only be considered as an 'add on', as to launch a 'brag only' gaming platform would be a real risk.

Poker platforms may see the potential, but may also decide to play safe, and build on what they already have as opposed to risking the unknown. A surge of new sign ups may be seen in the initial stages, but that is not a true indicator of where a gaming phenomenon is really heading. It will take a little while to truly assess potential, as online gamers can be fickle (astute), and once the great sign up bonuses drift off, they may themselves drift back into poker.

At the moment there is only one true multi player online brag platform, and although a couple of others do advertise online brag, they will be playing the house, not other players, which is not what online brag players want. So with only one real online 3 card brag site at the moment, are others going to follow? The most likely scenario in the current economic climate is that other companies will keep a close eye on what happens and let others make mistakes or successes before deciding to make the financial commitment to adding 3 card brag to their website's gaming options.
