Many people from the UK and elsewhere enjoy spending a few relaxing days or weeks in holiday villas.

This gives them a much needed chance to rest and escape the pressures of their daily existences.

However, like any area of life, most consumers are looking to keep spending to a minimum when they go on villa holidays and other forms of vacation.

New research from Santander Cards suggests that those determined to head away to holiday villas may benefit from being tactical with their timing.

It found that the cost of the average family holiday rises significantly during half-term breaks from school.

Indeed, figures produced by the organisation suggested that the typical break of this nature may increase in price by as much as 69 per cent or more.

Meanwhile, for breaks that commenced on the week beginning on October 23rd, when most schools were closed, the price of jetting off on a holiday soared by up to 135 per cent in some cases, it claimed.

However, Santander Cards did note that the hikes in cost were felt more or less keenly depending on where consumers were flying from and to.

Responding to the findings, director of the operations Ian Coles said such price discrepancies are not surprising.

He remarked: "Demand during school holidays is always high so some price inflation is inevitable, but our research shows that parents with children of a school age could face premiums of more than 100 per cent.

"With winter fast approaching and the cold weather setting in, half term is the perfect excuse for many to go abroad to get some sun, but with premium hikes like this the majority of people may simply not be able to afford it."

In order to avoid such price increases, those planning trips to holiday villas may benefit from being more flexible in terms of their dates for leaving and returning to the UK.

If this is possible, they should be able to get better value deals, leaving them with more cash to spend when they are away.
