Things To Do With Your Children On A Nature Walk

Spending time with your children outdoors is one of the simple joys in life

. It is something you can do any time of the year. There are plenty of things to do with your children while out on a nature walk. Communing with nature is good for the body and the mind. The fresh air and exercise are beneficial for every member of the family. It also offers the opportunity for bonding between parent and child. Talking is good while you walk, but so are the quiet moments.

When it comes to things to do on a walk through nature, use your imagination. Be in the moment and relish it for what it is. Use your senses and let your feet take you to some interesting places. Have fun with your time spent outdoors with your loved ones.

Short walks are always preferable to long walks. You may enjoy one to two hour walks for exercise, but keep it to 30 minutes or less when you head outdoors with your kids. Spending a shorter amount of time strolling in the great outdoors will seem like an adventure for the kids and they are less likely to tire or get bored if it does not involve too much of a time commitment. After all, the younger your children are, the shorter will their attention span be.

Things to do while walking a trail, the sidewalk, or through the park, varies depending on your location and the interests of your little ones. Let your son or daughter talk about what they see. Let them describe a bird, a rock, a tree, or the lake. It might surprise you what you can learn from them.

Watch the ground for tracks as you walk. Take pictures of tracks with your digital camera or cell phone. When you go home, your kids will have a good time figuring out the type of animal the prints belong to.

Draw their attention to the sky. Mention the color of it and start a discussion about it. Talk about the different shades of it and the cloud cover. If the sun is out, mention that as well. Looking upward can lift everyone's spirits and it can also make your neck muscles feel better. Make a game out of counting the clouds. This can be a fun math lesson that your kids will have fun with.

What things appeal to your children? Most of them enjoy the dangerous or scary elements along the way. Indulge their curiosity by pointing out poison ivy and poison oak found along the path. If you encounter any fungi or strange looking insects, stop for a minute and take a look at it.

Tell your kids stories about walks you have taken when you were younger and mention the adventures you had. Talk about times spent in the outdoors in general, such as when you used to go camping, visit your grandparents at their summer cottage, or vacations spent at the beach. Make the stories as enthralling and entertaining as possible. Your children will love it!
