The possible cause of brain drain from developing countries: example from Jordan

Brain drain defined asnet lossof a country,s highly trained and skilled manpower through migration.. So, a nation's or institution's loss of scientific, technical, or leadership talent when these people relocate. This is a problem in developing countries including Jordan , which use their limited resources to educate citizens only to see them migrate to nations that offer higher salaries or other desirable conditions." (Barker, 2003). A situation that occurs when highly skilled people migrate from one place to another, especially in search of advanced education and employment. It often occurs when young people migrate from developing countries to Europe, Australia, Canada or the United States.

Job satisfaction, or lack of it, is often the cause of the brain drain in Jordan. The reason behind the flight of many skilled Jordanians to the West is not only poverty in their home country, but also the inappropriate policies exist in some universities in Jordan. However, we have highly written policies at our universities in Jordan but the problem of their implementations which depends on how the president wish to interpret it so, the polices are personalised in away. This issue double by changing the university presidency frequently.

As many others I am currently emigrated to western countries because I was unsatisfied with the policies around me but I do feel guilty for opting to go and better the education of foreigner students when our Jordanian students are not adequately catered for mainly because of lack of number of staff who involve in teaching. But what else can one do? Yes, there should be a sense of loyalty to our country that spent so much on our training.

If the higher education and its quality is matter to Ministry of Higher Education, then this issue need to be taken seriously this time and one need to stop the bleedings of losing highly skilled professionals from Jordan.
