The Worst Careless Driving Offences

Many of us will admit to being guilty of a bit of careless driving now and again;

going slightly too fast in a 30 zone, eating an apple, or even smoking whilst driving. None of us would expect to be prosecuted for these minor transgressions. However, that's exactly what happened to a man in Scotland recently, who was charged by police for blowing his nose while in a traffic jam, despite the vehicles handbrake being on at the time.

It isn't just the UK where policing has gone mad. In some states in America laws still exist that prohibit the most bizarre behaviour. In Massachusetts you should avoid driving with your pet gorilla in the backseat, and in Alaska you should never allow your dog to have a ride on the roof of your car, or you could face a spell in prison. California law prevents unoccupied motor vehicles from travelling over 60 mph, and also frowns upon women wearing housecoats whilst driving.

Every morning while you are driving to work there are many bizarre careless driving incidents occurring on our roads, and only the tip of the iceberg are witnessed by the police. For example, after flossing her teeth while driving at 70 mph on the motorway, a woman was last month charged for careless driving.

By far the most extreme case of careless driving in recent months is the case of Michael Wiles, who drove his motorbike along Melbourne's Eastern Freeway at speeds of over 45 mph wearing a barbecue. The bizarre incident occurred when Wiles discovered the discarded barbecue at the side of the road and decided to take it home by inserting his body through the wooden frame. Undeterred that his vision was obscured by a metal grate, Wiles' crime was only discovered when a photograph of the incident fell into the hands of the police. After blaming his behaviour on "lack of thought processes" in court, Wiles was fined and disqualified from driving for a month.

Make sure to steer clear of these dodgy drivers next time you're on the road.
