The Western Maryland Railway: American Company For Many Years

The Western Maryland Railway (AAR symbol: WM) was an American company railroad Class I operating in Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania

. It was primarily a carrier of coal and freight, but also operated some passenger trains. It was built in the Chessie System in 1973 and stopped operating in 1983, when it merged into the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The B & O was subsequently merged into CSX Transportation in 1987.

It all began with the creation of Carroll & Frederick Railroad Baltimore in 1852 who intended to construct a line in Maryland between Baltimore and western Washington County. began to build from Baltimore to the west. In 1853, Maryland General Assembly changed its name to Western Maryland.

Construction began in 1857 from Owings Mills. The Northern Central Railway which connected already Iwings Mills in Baltimore, was used to serve this great city. The line reached Westminster in 1871, and Hagerstown in 1872. This section became the East Subdivision. In 1873 the WM built his own line between Owings Mills and Baltimore, and realized a connection between Hagerstown and Williamsport to transport coal brought by the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. In 1876, he inaugurated the station Hillen Station in Baltimore who became the headquarters of the company.

The first extension was the Pennsylvania line connecting Edgemont (Maryland) in Waynesboro and Shippensburg. This line became the Lurgan Subdivision and was leased to the Baltimore & Cumberland Valley Railroad in 1881, and was connected to the Harrisburg & Potomac Railroad in 1886.The Western Maryland Railway: American Company For Many Years


A second road in Pennsylvania, called Hanover Subdivision, was acquired by the WM when it took control of the Baltimore & Hanover Railroad, and the Gettysburg Railroad in late 1886. This new section is detached from the main line at Emory Grove WM to serve Hanover and Gettysburg and then found the line of WM in Highfield, near the Maryland border in Pennsylvania. A branch of Porters in York, Pennsylvania was completed in 1893, and became the York subdivision. The WM, with the opening of its subsidiary Potomac Valley Rail Road between Big Pool and Williamsport, Md., was able to connect with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B & O) in 1892.

This significantly increased freight traffic. The construction of an extension between Hagerstown and Cumberland began in 1903 and ended in 1906, she became the West Subdivision. In order to service its growing network, the WM built a major deposit in Hagerstown in 1909, with a roundhouse, workshops and other installations. The yard was also enlarged in Hagerstown. In 1904 the WM completed the construction of a terminal at Port Covington in Baltimore on the Patapsco River. The extension of Connellsville, connecting Cumberland to Connellsville, Pa., began in 1906 but was not completed until 1912.

A Connellsville, WM connects with the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad (P & LE). In 1915, the WM obtained rights of way over the line between the B & O Bowest Junction (south of Connellsville) and Chiefton, West Virginia, which gave access to coal mines west of Fairmont, Virginia Western. Although it was never huge, the Connellsville division moved quickly to the Midwest cargo and coal from its own mines of Fairmont and Somerset, Pennsylvania. The WM opened a station in Cumberland traveler and another in Hagerstown in 1913. The Cumberland station housed the offices of the Western Division.

The West Virginia Central & Pittsburgh Railway was created in 1880 and began with a narrow gauge line. He went to the standard gauge in 1881. In the years that followed, he opened a huge logging and coal in the Allegheny Highlands located north of West Virginia. The Western Maryland Railway: American Company For Many Years


This railway was originally the creation of new towns like Davis, Thomas, Parsons and Elkins. Located in the Tygart Valley River, Elkins had a large yard and served as a hub for Western Maryland and the Chessie System until the 1980s. Leaving this valley through a tunnel under the Cheat Mountain, West Virginia Central & Pittsburgh began to plot a route to the south from the late 1890s, he went up the court of Shavers Fork River, then skirted the arm Greenbrier River to the west of Durbin of Pocahontas County where he could connect with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1900. This portion was called Durbin Division. Sold to George Jay Gould in 1902, he became a part of WM 1905.

To connect the two network, a line between Maryland Junction (south of Cumberland, Marylan) and Elkins was built. She took the name of Thomas Subdivision. This line, characterized by the Blackwater River Canyon, flourished thanks to illegal logging and charcoal, and was closed in the 1970s. But after the panic of 1907 hit hard Gould, WM went bankrupt March 5, 1908. The B & O became a strong minority shareholder of WM 1927. The same year, the WM bought the Greenbrier Cheat & Elk Railroad that linked the Cheat Junction Durbin Subdivision to Bergoo.

This line became known as GC & E Subdivision. In 1929, the WM bought a portion of the West Virginia Midland Railway, which served to extend the GC & E Subdivision to Webster Springs. While these lines were originally built for logging, the WM also used for transporting coal.
