The Uninsured American
There are many reasons for being uninsured in the United States
. Perhaps someone has lost a job or they are a young person moving from dependence on their parents to adulthood. These U.S. citizens, some with children, some without, may be working low paying jobs that do not offer health benefits, or they just may be facing difficult times. Some of these people may be a loved one, a friend, a neighbor, or an ex-coworker. These are the people that you associate with daily. They endure each day privately. And you have no clue.
This issue doesn?t affect you though. You have health insurance coverage and it is not really up to you to help them out. Well, this issue may affect you more than you think.
Because many U.S. citizens lack health care insurance they do not go to doctors for medical treatment as much as those who are insured. Due to the high costs of medical treatments and procedures these people can't afford to pay on their own. These same people who cannot afford to see a doctor run the risk of spreading illnesses that are not treated. But this is not a concern for you. You can always go to the doctor when you need to.
Uninsured people often go too long before they see a doctor and are diagnosed with life threatening sicknesses. By the time that they see a doctor the illness is not as manageable and death is likely for them. The high cost of the medical treatments are then passed on to the children. How does any of this affect you, you may ask. These same children who have just been awarded medical debt may become dependents of the state. This is how this issue affects you, your income funds the state. The medical professionals won't consider the debt as a loss, instead the price of treatments and items such as the gown that you wear increase. Perhaps your health insurance provider will eat the additional costs. In reality, we know that you will see an increase in your health care premiums the following year to cover the expensive hospital costs.
Even though you originally believed that other people being uninsured was none of your concern, hopefully you can now see clearly. You will either pay now or you will pay later. The benefit to paying now is quality of life for another American citizen.
