The Treatment Options For Colour Blindness

It's only natural to want to learn more about a vision condition if you or a loved one is afflicted with it

. Colour blindness is pretty rare and usually men are more prone to being afflicted with the problem rather than women. This condition means that a person is unable to discern between certain colours. For example, they may have trouble seeing much or any difference between reds and greens or it may be that they can't distinguish between yellows and blues. Some others are unable to much colour at all and see varying shades of black, white and gray. Regardless, it's a condition that can be easily managed and usually doesn't impact a person's life too much.

Colour blindness is most often congenital, meaning you have it from birth. It is usually passed down through your family's genes, making you more predisposed to develop this condition. Normally, the eye has three separate cones, which allow you to see red, green and blue colour spectrums. Inherited colour blindness causes one of these to malfunction, or to be absent altogether. Inherited defects don't change, meaning your eyesight will remain stable throughout your life.

Nonetheless, in certain situations colour vision deficiencies can develop instead and for a varied number of reasons. First, you may lose your ability to see colours due to growing older, as your eyesight begins to fail. Secondly, certain pre-existing vision problems can precipitate this vision deficiency. These include diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration. Third, if you experience an injury to your eyeball itself, then you may begin having trouble seeing colours too. Fourth, damage to your eyes for UV rays can incite colour blindness too. Fifth, some diseases such as multiple sclerosis or leukemia can trigger this problem. Sixth, exposure to certain toxins or chemicals such as fertilizers or carbon monoxide can increase your chances of developing colour vision deficiencies. Lastly, there are certain prescription drugs that have unintentionally induced colour blindness for some people.

At the moment there is no cure for this condition, though there are certainly strategies which you can use. The sooner the problem is detected in life, the easier it is to learn to manage life with this problem. Nevertheless, adults who've determined after some time that they've had this affliction for a good portion of their life can adapt to any problems the condition presents. In addition, some companies have developed special lenses, which change how light enters your eye. This could make it easier to distinguish between different colours, though the results have been mixed. Researchers are still in disagreement over this issue so you will need to decide for yourself if this option is right for you.

Lastly, many years ago scientists were successful in curing colour blindness in two monkeys by injecting them with the cells necessary to reverse the condition. Scientists running the study, are hopeful that the same results will occur in humans, when testing is finally sanctioned by the FDA. Until such time, the hardest part is detecting that the issue is present so that you can take measures to adjust to life with the problem. That is why regular eye exams are critical for you and your family, to uncover issues like these early on.
