Dental implant treatment typically takes three to six months to complete. The length of time is dependent upon the area and extent of the restoration. One jaw, for example, obviously requires less work than both jaws. But it is important to be aware of the fact that patients need not lie in bed or keep a low profile during the course of their treatment. On the contrary, patients can maintain their normal lifestyle and can even wear their dentures until the final stage of treatment when their new teeth are placed.

Implant candidates travelling from abroad will have the pleasure of coming to Iceland three times, with a minimum stay of two nights per visit. Nordic Smile's travel partner--ITA--will secure discounted airfares and accomodation in a centrally-located four-star hotel.

Stage I - Implant Screws

During Stage I, the surgeon will make small incisions at the top of the gum line in order to expose the jaw bone. Small holes will then be drilled in the bone prior to inserting the implants, which are then topped with cover screws (small protective caps). The gums will then be sutured over the implants and the patient will either wear their own dentures or be fitted with a temporary prosthesis to wear until their new, permanent teeth are placed.

The surgical aspect of Stage I typically takes an hour or two and may be performed under intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Recovery time from the anesthesia will depend on the sedation method used. The patient can expect to experience swelling for 4 to 7 days. A soft diet is recommended for the first 4 to 6 weeks following Stage I surgery.

Stage II - Abutments and Crown Preparation

Stage II takes place after enough time has passed for the implants to take root (osseointegrate) in the jaw bone--usually three to six months after the initial placement. Small incisions will be made to expose the implants so that the surgeon can attach and tighten the abutments (the piece that will be used to connect the implant to the crown) in preparation for the restoration. The gums will then be closed with sutures.

Since Stage II treatment is generally performed under local anesthesia, there is virtually no post-operative recovery time.

The surgeon may prepare the crowns or refer the patient to another restorative specialist for this step. Crown preparation requires the new impressions (molds) of the patient's mouth and gums to be taken following implant placement. From these impressions, a metal framework that will hold the new teeth will be fabricated.

Stage III - Restoration

During Stage III, the patient's new teeth will be fabricated and fixed to the abutments. Fabrication will take between one and eight weeks depending on how many teeth are being replaced. The teeth are then fitted to the abutments and examined and adjusted to ensure that the size, shape, color, fit and bite alignment are correct.

At the conclusion of a successful implantation, the patient is given a copy of their dental medical journal which describes, in detail, every aspect of the treatment they received--including the types of materials used, condition of jaw before and after surgery, prognosis, etc.
