The Snowman Movie - A Christmas Staple

The Snowman Movie - A Christmas Staple

Few people know that the origin of the short film known as The Snowman is actually a book

. Published in 1978, The Snowman was penned by British author Raymond Briggs and told the story of a young boy whose snowman came to life. Four years later, animation director Dianne Jackson turned the book into a twenty six minute long short film - one that garnered immediate success.

The Snowman was first shown on television late on Christmas Eve in 1982. All over the country, families tuned in to watch the magical story unfold and a sense of Christmas wonder spread over them: the film was a hit. Since that first showing, The Snowman has been shown on television every single Christmas and has become a true icon of British pop culture.

One of the most impressive things about the film is its lack of spoken words. Like the book, there is no dialogue and the story is told solely through action, though the film has the added music, including one song with words - the famous "Walking in the Air" that has since become embedded in the mind of ever British citizen after hearing it at least once.

Following that inaugural showing, The Snowman went on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 1982. It has also fared well on various broadcasters' "Top 10" or "Top 100" television Christmas moments, and is still tuned into by millions during its annual showing each Christmas. The Snowman has continued to be a large part of British festive culture, and was even transformed into a stage show that first appeared in 1986 and was most recently seen as a revised version in 2000, though the story had been somewhat changed to add new characters, including antagonist Jack Frost. The Snowman also inspired several advertising references, the key one perhaps being Scottish soft drink company Irn Bru's advertisement which shows The Snowman and boy flying over various locations in Scotland with a revised version of the song that contains different lyrics advertising Irn Bru.

Christmas is coming up, so it'll be time to enjoy watching The Snowman again - but if it looks like you're going to miss it this year, you can always buy The Snowman DVD to enjoy at your leisure - and, indeed, any time throughout the year, because if you missed it on TV, well, it just wouldn't be Christmas, would it?
