The Retail Christmas Season

The Retail Christmas Season

The Retail Christmas Season

Another Christmas will soon be past. This merry December seems to come round so quickly these days. A unusual concoction of stress, all to be dissolved by the arrival of the New Year.Traditionally, this has been regarded as a time for getting together. But for the hard working retailer, it is an opportunity to capitalize on the festivities.A time to verify their usefulness in retailing and achieve more sales than the previous year.In many ways, it is unfortunate that Christmas has become so commercial, but this is a reflection of the society that we have formed. The year 2010 has proved more difficult than other years for a lot of people due to the numerous redundancies and the international banking 'crisis'. The effect is, a sharp decrease in banks lending money, which has produced the same effect on spending. As a result the whole process has moved slowly to a standstill. This is natural enough as in many ways, it will ensure more solid bases for the banking infrastructure in the future, which until recently has been constructed like a 'pile of cards'. For many of the population, December is a time of looking back on what they have made of themselves. How they managed to achieve it? Could they have done it better, and how will it affect their life next year? This in itself is a very useful process, thinking about one's experiences, can help to strengthen the foundations of our thoughts. The recent icy weather (I used to love the snow, and still do.) has dramatically reduced the population's spending at a time of the retailers most profitable weeks of the year. In turn, this has a 'knock-on' result to the rest of society. Even so, it is of course not all doom and gloom, as 'where there is a trough there will always be a peak', and mankind cannot remain in a state of financial hardship forever. As a consequence of these times, we may see a change in the quality of mechandise, for example Germany's exports are doing very well these days. Some of the products they manufacture are, Cars, eg. Mercedes Benz, BMW, Porsche; Washing machines, eg. AEG.The list of products can go on and on, but the sucess is obviously due to the high quality with which they manufacture. The once great automobile industry of the United Kingdom has virtually dwindled to a halt, apart from several specialist models. The main reason seems to be from what I can see, is that the workers and unions try to take out more money from the business than is sustainable. Like many societies before us who have enjoyed centuries of successful trading across the globe. We have become lazy, and look for reward without effort, convincing ourselves this is the more intelligent and more pleasurable route. The fundemental rules of our society and its 'money for nothing' attitude need to change in order for us to move forward and not only be a player in the global development, but to have the satisfaction that we have created something through hard work and our own energy.Christmas is a time of giving and feeling good in oneself, a time of reflection, and a time to take a step back from the everday routine of life that moulds us into the characters we have become. I wish you a happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.
