The Orange Leopard Gecko: Tangerine Beauties

Have you seen the orange leopard geckos? They are quite the sight and they will catch the eye of breeders and keepers alike. If you need to know more about these tangerine beauties, here are some basic facts and info on these living jewels.

Morph Colors

The orange leopard gecko can be one of the many morphs of the creature. These morphs are the known variations and genetic mutations of the creature. These morphs can vary in shape, size, as well as color. One of the most notable orange lizards is the tangerine morph. The normal' leo has spots on a background color. The tangerines have background colors that are orange. A popular variant of this morph is the hypo tangerine or the hypo melanistic tangerine. This variant has less of the melanin that produces the distinctive black spots in the lizards. Some have so little of it that they present no spots at all, leaving just a solid orange background skin.

Orange Tail

There are also morphs that have more than the usual amount of orange in their tails and they are called the carrot tails. There is an active effort to produce more orange tailed lizards but some agree on about 15% of the tail in the orange color is enough to be considered a carrot tail. Some lines have even reached insane amounts of coloring, with some like the Ray Hay line known for reaching about 90% of the tail. Though this may not be present in all of the carrot tails, breeders have made great strides and lizards with around 40% orange in their tail are now a common occurrence.

The Sunglow

The fabulous thing about morphs is that some of the traits can be combined with each other. Now imagine combining a carrot tail with the solid orange body of a hypo melanistic tangerine you get the gorgeous sunglow. This is certainly one of the most popular morphs out there especially for the fans of the orange colored lizards. Plus, since the carrot tails and the tangerine traits are both said to be line bred, it isn't as hard to breed lizards to further the line or produce more of these sunglows.

Striped Morphs

The striped morphs like the red stripe are also popular variants that have orange coloring. The red stripe for example, may have a misleading name in terms of coloration but the two distinct stripes that run down their backs are in fact more of an orange than red. Like most of the other morphs you may find some with more intense orange coloration or more red orange coloration. Also, some may have different patterns or stripes on them. Some have 2 or more while others just have one big one running down their backs.

Orange Bells

As mentioned before, some of the morph traits can start to combine with each other. The albino bells for example, can be found in an orange color configuration. Bright bells as they are known can be a unique looking example of these lizards and should be a great addition to any lizard collection.
