Haifa is a very important city in Israel and also an important port of the Mediterranean Sea
. It is also a very old cit, since the first mention of the establishment date back to the third century. Only a small town back then, it evolved into a very important city. A place to see is the Baha'i Gardens. Located on the slope of Mount Carmel, the gardens contain the Shrine of the Bab which is impressive due to its golden dome and beautiful terraced gardens. The World Centre is often visited by Baha'is as it is considered to be the administrative center of their faith. Tourists still come here because of the beauty of the gardens. They offer organized free tours of the gardens and a reservation is needed if you travel in groups of more than 25 people.
When in Haifa don't forget to visit the cave of Elijah, the prophet mentioned by all of the important religions in the city. It is believed that Elijah used to live inside a cave located on Mount Carmel during a time when the city was ruled by King Ahab.
The famous Stella Maris, a Carmelite church where the Carmelite Order expanded inside the Catholic Church, is also a must see. While visiting the Cave of Elijah you can take the hiking trail towards the top of Mount Carmel in order to find the Carmelite church. The place is also used as a monastery and a hospice.
Haifa University is an important highlight of the city. The campus was designed by Oscar Niemeyer who is well known for designing the UN building located in New York. Now the campus looks a complex as new building are constantly added. If you reach the 30th floor in the Eshkol Tower you will be able to see the views of northern Israel.
