The Mater is located in the north side of Dublin and has the leading National Pulmonary Hypertension Unit centre in the Republic of Ireland. It is also well known for being the only 24 hour, 365 days a year cardiology service in the country. Cardiac surgery was pioneered at the Mater Hospital during the 1950's and the first successful heart operation was performed shortly afterwards. The hospital continued to make breakthroughs and train new consultants with great success. Over the past twenty years, more than 20,000 patients have received cardiac treatments from the Mater.
Patients can be treated at the Mater hospital for a huge variety of illnesses and injuries, and its Spinal Injuries Unit is also particularly of note. The fact it has become a highly regarded teaching hospital goes some way to showing the quality of its research and technological advancements.
