, the Isle of Wight Walking Festival in May is set to draw plenty of tourists looking for a unique getaway.

Already in its 12th year, the festival has proved a firm favourite with more than the tourists enjoying their holidays isle of wight locals also join in each year. It became an award winning event last year when it won a gold CIPR award for Best Event, and a silver for Tourism ExSELLence for Best Event.

Over half of the island is recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty, with its 60 miles of dramatic and breathtaking Heritage Coastline, unspoilt countryside and over 500 miles of well-maintained and signposted footpaths.

Tourists are often drawn to the Tennyson Trail; a 12 mile hike that allows walkers to follow in the footsteps of the Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson.The Isle Of Wight Is The Ideal Place For A Unique Holiday


The festival runs from the 8th of May to the 23rd.

The Isle of Wight has plenty to offer those not keen on walking too. In April, tourists can wander around a festival full of old buses at the Vintage Vehicle Cavalcade 2010; equestrian enthusiasts can watch the re-scheduled Isle of Wight Grand National; music fans can listen to Jools Holland's concert in Ryde. Events in May include the Real Ale Festival; the only boat show in the world dedicated to rigid inflatable boats and the Jazz Festival at Ventnor Botanic Garden which will be headlined by jazz legend Courtney Pine.

Every year 2.6 million people visit the Isle of Wight - that's 21 tourists per resident! Perhaps they're attracted to the island's sunny climate; it has more hours of sunshine each year than any other British resort.

It's also popular with thrill seekers as the island is believed to be the most haunted island in the world. Thousands of ghost-hunters from across the world are attracted to the island because of the supernatural activity, which has been blamed on unseen energy, also known as 'ley' lines, which run under the island.

Many thousands of ghosts, spirits, poltergeists and apparitions are said to haunt the Isle of Wight or 'Ghost Island'- the world's most haunted island.
