The Hottest Celebrity Night Spot - the Stork Club

The Stork Club, owned by Sherman Billingsley, ruled the celebrity night club scene during the early 1930's to 1950's. The Stork Club attracted nearly every famous person in popular culture during it's time. Celebrities from all walks of life were spotted there nightly, including Frank Sinatra, Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, Bert Lahr, and even the Kennedy family. The Stork Club was not an ordinary urban watering hole. With Sherman Billingsley's leadership, the Stork Club easily became the most famous Night Spot in the country.

Sherman Billingsely was the owner of theStork Club. He was from Enid, Oklahama, and had 3 brothers named Fred, Logan and Ora. The club symbolized caf society from the end of Prohibition in 1933 to it's closing in the early 1960's. Billingsley would really take care his guests, offering them complimentary champagne, meals, and Stork Club branded perfumes, ties and apparel. Other New York City clubs had the sophistication (El Morocco) and drew the sporting crowd (Toots Shor's Restaurant), but the Stork Club mixed power, money and glamour.

Can you imagine Rocky Marciano rubbing elbows with Judy Garland; the Harrimans and the Kennedys seated next to Ethel Merman and Irving Berlin; Sinatra sharing a bottle of champagne with Jimmy Durante. On any given night, you might find Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall seated at the table next to Cary Grant and Greer Garson, or perhaps bump into Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz on the dance floor.

The Stork Club opened in the year of 1929 on West 58Th Street. This was a short walk from Sherman Billingsley's apartment over on 152 West 58Th Street. However, Prohibition agents shut the club down on December 22 of 1931. The club then moved to East 51st Street for 3 years. After that, the club relocated for the last time to 3 East 53rd Street in 1934. Today the ornamental bar of the Stork Club is to be found in Jim Brady's Bar in Maiden Lane.
