The Great Texas Myth

My daughter is married to a Yankee! Seeing that With that admission off my chest

, I will verify that the majority of the Yankee perceptions usually are that Texas is this vast flat prairie country. (They have no clue precisely what a prairie is!) Texas features some prairie territory but is not just a prairie. The Great state has mountains, in what is known as the Big Bend Country given its name from a bend in the Rio Grande River. The Big Bend area is the home of the Davis Mountains. The highest elevation in the Davis Mountains is 8378-foot Mount Livermore, the fifth-greatest pinnacle within the state.

There is another section of Texas named The Hill Country. The Hill Country features the Austin-San Antonio region and is also home of probably the most eye-catching parts of the state. It was the home of Lyndon B. Johnson, the 36th President of the United States and his wife Lady Bird.

The center of this hill country is old Fredericksburg, often called the Culinary Capital of the Hill Country, attractive Fredericksburg provides tourists a range of flavors to tempt any kind of palette, from older German born stand bys similar to sausage and stuffed cabbage, to sushi, Texas cuisine and bar-b-q; as over 60 restaurants vie for one's attention, which include quite a few attaining national reputation.

Along with delicious cuisines, Fredericksburg offers an Old World feel, with enduring buildings and sufficient history to satisfy even the most detailed of history lovers; Exceptional shopping is all around together with unique shopping, live music locations, panoramic selection for a lot of your out of doors recreation, like bicycling and walking; and entry to the country's fastest growing wine location, with seven vineyards calling Gillespie County home. Sample these award-winning varietals; take it easy on verandas looking over lavender fields and enjoy life at the slow pace. Willkommen to Fredericksburg!

History in the Hills

The National Museum of the Pacific War is devoted to telling the story of the Pacific War in a very non-biased voice and features items from both American and Japanese soldiers, retrieved military gear, ncluding a peaceful spot to consider those who have gone on before us. It's appropriate this national museum is found in Fredericksburg, as this is actually the birthplace of that war's commanding military officer, Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. As an aside, I joined the US Navy just after finishing high school and served on-board the USS Essex, an aircraft carrier, since relegated to the scrap heap. In a side garden shown magnificently, I found one of the 4 massive propellers that drove the Essex. This ushered up numerous fond memories that I told to my wife.

The LBJ State and National Parks provide you with a historical look at the late President of the United States, Lyndon B. Johnson. Please take a guided bus tour to the Texas White House plus the ranch, for understanding of the man who changed his simple start to become the leader of the United States. Also in the LBJ State Park, you will discover the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farmstead depicting pioneer life in the early 20th century.

Fredericksburg's architecture is conserved in a beautiful historic district, with over 700 historically great buildings with many of them a part of the National Register of Historic Places. German is spoken from time to time and old customs are always seen here. One of several the best features may be the quaint Sunday House. These small homes, with the external stairs, were constructed by early German pioneers and are completely unique to Gillespie County.

In combination with destinations, Fredericksburg is usually packed with activity with more than 100 special attractions and fests held on a yearly basis. Stay through the night with any of the many motels/hotels, bed and breakfasts, guesthouses, and RV parks.
