The Glass Beach at Fort Bragg

The Glass Beach at Fort Bragg

The glass beach at fort Bragg is an amazing example of how nature can correct mans mistakes. The beach, which used to be the town dump, has been turned into a magnificent attraction by the pounding tides. What used to be thousands of shards of glass are now perfectly formed pebbles. It originated in the late forties, when people dumped all sorts on the beach, including old cars and scrap junk that they had no use for. In the early sixties, attempts were made by locals to stop the dumping, and toxic items became prohibited, as well as many other items. In the late sixties, the water board realised the extend of the damage that the beach was causing to the surrounding area, and plans started for a new dump, to be moved far away from the sea and therefore minimise the impact caused. Occasionally you see things that remind you of the previous purpose of the land, like a rusty nail or piece of wire, but generally all you can see is millions of glass pebbles sparkling in the sun. In fact the local residents are now so proud of the beach that you cannot take the glass pebbles away. There are lots of little tide pools located around this coast, and crabs, mollusc and aquatic plants are housed here, fond of the ever changing environment in this unusual residency.

While in fort Bragg, which is three hours north of san Francisco by car, you can also visit the giant redwoods and pygmy forest, where the beautiful trees stand, the pygmy forest is an attraction in itself; the trees here live in poor soil, and therefore, although some are hundreds of years old, they never get very tall.

If you are planning on travelling to the US or visiting Fort Bragg this year, make sure you have a comprehensive Travel Insurance policy.
