The night was only just beginning and Eddie held out high hopes to score with one
of the little darlings from the sweet factory and had said so to grouchy Dave behind the bar who snorted disbelievingly. Eddie was no longer in the mood for that kind of night so Doris, the barmaid, was surprised when he courteously left her at her doorway and with a grin called out catch you later babe. She was even too surprised to be hurt until it was too late to shout out to him. He was walking fast in the direction of the canal.
