Napoleon Bonaparte played solitaire when he was in exile in St. Helena in 1816. It soon after became a popular card game amongst the French, and before long it had been exported to England where it was known as Patience. Indeed, many of the words used in the game have French origins. Many of the variations have been named after Napoleon. Early historical texts that describe solitaire are also written in French.

Solitaire appeared in the 19th and 20th centuries, and there are hundreds of them. You will find small variations in the rules depending on where the literature was written, but the basic idea remained the same.

Countless people have and will continue to pass idle hours playing solitaire. The game has become so popular that most computers today come pre-loaded with it. Its popularity may stem from the fact that solitaire has a basic set of rules & can be played alone. Solitaire is the type of game that allows you to space out in a focused sort of way and that can be very stress reliving. Unlike several other card games, the aspect of betting will not likely ever come in to play in the classic game of solitaire.

Computer solitaire made its first appearance with the first personal computers; it was simple to represent cards on with the computer platforms and programs that were in use then. Microsoft packaged it with its basic office application suite in 1990, and because of this "free" access, its popularity quickly spread. Before long, the graphics improved and new variations of the game came to being. Today, you can buy a suite of solitaire games that encompasses over 500 different variations of the game.

Its popularity as a computer game may stem from the different variations or from the fact that you don't need to do any shuffling as a player when online solitaire. It may also have to do with the "easy escape"; you can get out of a game by the simple click of a mouse and start a new one. The different levels of complexity also make it rather inviting no matter the kind of mood one is in.
