The Dental Experience-how The Dentist's Assistant Sets The Mood Of The Whole Appointment

In going to the dentist, as a client, you know that you end up associating with people all over in the office

. The people at the front counter get your name in, and get you sent to the room of their choice, to get your appointment underway. That is where the dental assistant comes in. Though their role may often go unnoticed, an assistant is one of the most important and critical members of the oral health care team.

What is it that a dental assistant does? These individuals work closely with dentists and dental hygienists, and help them ensure that the patients they are caring for are getting the best quality of health care services. They help clean teeth, hold instruments, or anything that they are asked to do at the time. A good way to get your foot in the door of an oral health occupation would be to become an assistant. Depending on the dentist, you dont need to have prior training, as they will do hands on with whomever they hire.

Now we mentioned previously that a dental assistant helps a dentist as they perform in patient care. But helping by assisting in treatment procedures is just the beginning of what an assistant does. They will use radiographs, as well as prepare, sterilize, and disinfect instruments and equipment during dental procedures. They will also do things such as taking teeth molds for study casts, preparing supplies needed for the next procedure, making temporary crowns, and applying topical anesthetics and cavity-preventing agents!

A well trained and well experienced assistant can in some states perform coronal polishing and restorative dentistry work. Also, they are good at interpersonal skills, being able to talk to clients with genuine interest, as well as getting to know a variety of people. Aside from all these qualities, a dentist will have their assistants record accurate medical histories, and provide their clients with oral care instructions before and after treatment.

And knowledge given to dental assistants is not only given by the dentist, though hands on training can give you the best experience. You can enhance your skills and knowledge beforehand, or during your time as an assistant. There are numerous amounts of dental assisting programs offered at colleges, technical schools and more. Even more of an edge is given to those who apply for education with schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation which gives an individual didactic laboratory and clinical instruction.

So if you are interested in being a dental assistant, go for it! It is a great occupation that gets you knowledge, good people skills and more! If not, remember to acknowledge and thank the ones who assist your dentist on your next visit!
