The Daycare Is Not A Babysitting Service
Many people have a misunderstanding about what a daycare is
. Some people think that a daycare is simply a daylong babysitting service. However, as a daycare director I would like to tell you that this is not even close to true.
There are two similarities between babysitting and daycare, but daycares offer so much more. The first thing is that both are services that will watch your children for a set amount of time. The second is that your children will most likely engage in some sort of play during both. However, the way that your children plays, and the how they spend their time at daycare is different from babysitting.
The best way to think about a daycare is as a child-learning center. It is true that we will watch your children all day and play games with them, but our goal is to be teachers as well. We think that being an extension of the family is the most important aspect, and that your children need to be nurtured. However, we are also focused on preparing your children for life, or at the least, kindergarten.
Do not get me wrong, I am not against babysitting. In fact, it is necessary if you want to go out on a date night or have some quality alone time. I just want to explain why people pay to have their children in daycares. At our daycare, we have a structured program.
As a babysitter, you let the children do what they want as long as it is not against the parent's rules and you follow them around. However, as a caregiver we guide the children through the day. We have time for learning, time for playing, time for snacks, and of course time for naps. Whereas a babysitter might put on a movie to pass the time, we engage your children in education games and activities. Our focus is the development of your children.
Just remember that a daycare is a learning center and a babysitter is watcher. As a daycare director, I think it is important to know and understand the difference between the two. If you are still not sure you have a full grasp, you should contact a daycare director near you and ask them about their program.
And please remember that if you are planning a date night a babysitter is still the way to go. I am not saying babysitters are bad, I am simply stating that there is a distinct difference that parents need to be aware of.
