Embryo Adoption- Adopt and Get to Carry the Baby!
Embryo adoption-donation is a great way for couples to conceive when their eggs and/or sperm are not allowing them to. In the past these couples would have needed to adopt a child to start their family. Traditional adoption is great, but some women may want to carry a child. With embryo adoption the couple gets to start their family through adoption, and the women gets to experience pregnancy.
What is embryo adoption-donation?
Embryo adoption is when a couple has "left-over" embryos from a previous IVF cycle, and they decide to give them to another couple. This can be done in many ways. It can be an open adoption, where the couple reveals their identity to the recipient. It can also be a closed adoption, where the recipient does not know anything about the couple that donated the embryos. Once a couple receives donated embryos they will go through a frozen embryo transfer. This is similar to the second half of an IVF cycle.
Who should consider embryo adoption-donation?
Anyone who wants to start a family, but is having trouble getting or staying pregnant through IVF or other fertility treatments would be a good candidate. Many times a couple cannot have a child due to the quality of the egg and/or sperm, using donor embryos fixes this problem. Couples that cannot afford traditional adoption may want to look into embryo adoption. It can be a lot cheaper and quicker than traditional adoption, but there is no guarantee that you will have a baby.
How do you find embryos to adopt?
There are a number of ways to find embryos. This first way to find embryos would be through an organization. Snowflakes is the most common but there are others. When you go through one of these organizations you are guaranteed to get embryos, but it could take a long time. These organizations are costly and you would spend about $7,000 to use one of them. You do not have to go through one of these; there are other ways to find embryos. One way is to contact your fertility clinic. They usually have a list that your name goes on and when embryos come available they contact you. This is a lot cheaper, but there is no guarantee that there will be any available. There is also an organization called Miracles Waiting. This is a site where people come to find couples to adopt their embryos. It reminds me of a dating site in the sense that people connect with people that they are interested in. If you are looking to adopt embryos, you will pay a small fee to join, post your "ad", and hope that someone is interested in you. Once a couple picks you it is up to the donor and the recipient to make the arrangements to ship the embryos. This can be done through anonymous email, or you can contact each other directly. This method is free, with the exception of the fee to join, but like using your clinic there is no guarantee.
If you are going through infertility and have not had success with IVF or other treatments, please consider embryo adoption. To increase your chances of getting pregnant through fertility treatments please visit IVF Success Program. Embryo adoption is a great way of starting your family and not many people are taking advantage of it.
