The Countries Of Asia

The Countries Of Asia

Like other continents, Asia has a number of different countries and territories under different governments

. There are separate articles about most of these countries and territories, but here they are, briefly: China, the country with the biggest population on earth (more than four hundred million), and a big area, too, larger than that of the United States. India, the next-biggest country in population. Once the name "India" included other countries that are now independent, and all these countries together made an area so big that it was called "the Indian subcontinent," meaning "almost a continent by itself." Pakistan , which was formerly part of India. It was separated from India because most of the people who live in Pakistan are of the Mohammedan religion, while most of the people who live in India are of the Hindu religion. Nepal, a small kingdom at the north of India.

This also was formerly part of India. Bhutan, another small country that was part of India and is still allied to it. Burma, a smaller country in the southern part of Asia, beside India. It is almost as big as Texas in size, and has more than twice as many people. Thailand, or Siam, a country of about the same size as Burma, both in area and in population. Indo - china, which is really three countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. This has long been called "French Indo-China," because it was controlled by France, but the countries now govern themselves. Malaya , which is a peninsula, or narrow arm of land, stretching far south of the mainland of Asia.

This territory belongs to Great Britain, and the different parts of it have different names, such as the Malay States and the Straits Settlements. Korea, one of the most ancient countries of the world, but now divided into two sections, North Korea and South Korea. Afghanistan, a kingdom in the southwestern part of Asia, about the same size as Burma or Siam. Iran, the country known in ancient times as Persia, large in area but not able to support a big population because so much of it is desert. Iraq, which with Egypt was one of the first two civilized countries on earth, several thousand years ago. Iraq was formerly called Mesopotamia.

Saudi Arabia, a kingdom, which covers most of the big western part of Asia known as the Arabian peninsula. Even more than Iran, Saudi Arabia is desert land and its population is small. Oman, a small country at the bottom tip of the Arabian peninsula, ruled by a sultan (king). Aden, a small territory controlled by England, also at the bottom of the Arabian peninsula. Yemen, a very small kingdom, about the size of the state of Missouri in both area and population, in the southern end of the Arabian peninsula. Jordan , a kingdom at the north of the Arabian peninsula, occupying part of the Holy Land. Its people are Arabs. Israel , the new republic founded by Jews in Palestine (the Holy Land), on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon, a small republic north of Israel, on the Mediterranean Sea. Syria, an ancient country, now a republic, above Lebanon and Israel, on the Mediterranean Sea. Most of the Syrians are Christian, unlike other peoples of Asia. The Countries Of Asia

Turkey, which occupies the part of Asia that reaches farthest to the west, known as Asia Minor. A small part of Turkey is also in Europe. Siberia , the largest region in Asia, which is part of the Soviet Union (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or U.S.S.R.). Siberia covers the entire northern part of Asia. Because it is so far north, most of it is quite cold, and not many more than ten million people live there-only about as many as live in the state of Pennsylvania, though Siberia covers more than a hundred times as much territory. Tibet, a country in the high mountains of central Asia, that is actually a part of China but governed itself without much interference until the Chinese Communist government took over control in 1953. Mongolia , a big region in the central part of Asia.

It is controlled by the U.S.S.R. Most of Mongolia is desert or mountains, and very few people live there-fewer than a million. All these different countries make up the continent of Asia, and there are many others on the islands near the continent-Ceylon, off the southern tip of India; Japan, and the Republic of the Philippines (Philippine Islands), off the eastern coast; and the big islands of Indonesia near the southeastern coast..
