The traveling show The Color Purple is hitting Florida this month
, and the show is worth all the hype. The touring cast includes Latoya London, Rufus Bonds and Kenita R. Miller, along with former castmate Fantasia Barrino. Barrino was an American Idol winner who beat out the competition in May 2004 and joined the cast in Chicago at the Arie Crown Theater in September after releasing two solo albums, Free Yourself and Fantastia, in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Barrino also won a Theatre World Award for her role in The Color Purple during her extended engagement, which will see her continue to perform through February 2010 in Los Angeles. The show is an inspirational production that has had Oprah raving since she starred in the silver screen production. Celie gives birth to two children from her father, though the babies are eventually taken from her before she is sold off to a widower to become a caretaker to his own children. The farmer then verbally and physically abuses Celie and even goes so far as to hide the letters from her loving sister, who left their home in the early 1900s to become a missionary in Africa. The story, however, has a happy ending, as Celie finds love and happiness when she takes her life back into her own hands.
Adapted from Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning book, the story was brought to a mainstream audience when Steven Spielberg made a 1985 film that starred Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Danny Glover as the abusive farmer and Akousa Busia as her sister Nettie. The story took many years to make it to the stage but finally premiered at Atlanta's Alliance Theater in 2004, eventually becoming nominated for 11 Tony Awards in 2006, including Best Musical.
Current producer Scott Sander said, "When I read the book, I was so moved by Celie. I couldn't believe she could get up every day and just keep going. I was so moved by her spirit." Though he had to convince Walker to bring the tale to the stage - not only visiting her in her Berkeley, California home but also sending her to New York to check out some Broadway shows with him - she eventually coincided. With Oprah Winfrey on board as an over-the-title producer of the musical (she was nominated for an Oscar for her role of Sofia in the film), the play eventually got rolling.
Unwilling to sacrifice talent, Sander worked for two years to find the perfect team to complement the award-winning story, which eventually ended with Allee Williss, Brenda Russell and Stephen Bray for the composition work and Pulitzer winner Marsha Norman for her book. Since then, the story has taken shape on stages all over the world, embracing Walker's original concept (unlike the film ever did) and taking audiences into Celie's world like never before. "I had to create the structure first, so that Celie is the center of every single character's story," Norman said to the Miami Herald. "When you adapt a big, majestic book you have to figure out what's left for you to do." She did well with the adaption and has since been able to rejoice in the musical's success, which stars Kenita R. Milller as Celie, in Bonds and London.
